About Me.

Larry Jackson Jr., MSEd, LMHC, LPC
Mental Health Counselor  |  Life Coach  |  Educator

Hello, I'm Larry Jackson, and I'm a Christian therapist dedicated to helping people find healing, purpose, and hope. I bring together my core values and clinical expertise to create a supportive, compassionate therapy experience. In my practice, I strive to balance professional insight with human warmth, inviting you to feel safe, heard, and understood. Below you'll find a bit about who I am and how I approach therapy:

Professional Experience.

Educational Foundation

I originally enrolled at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville to study mechanical engineering, driven by a passion for design and systems thinking. However, during that time, I realized I hadn’t yet developed the full set of competencies needed to succeed in the rigorous engineering coursework.  Feeling uncertain but determined not to give up on my future, I turned to prayer—seeking guidance and redirection from God.

During that season of reflection, I felt a divine nudge: look at the people who inspire me and the things that truly moved my spirit. That process led me to reflect on the impact of mentors, community leaders, and artists whose lives and words stirred something deeper in me. During that time I recalled a quote from Tupac Shakur that left a lasting impression: “You’ve got to live for something worth dying for.” That moment became a turning point—it clarified my desire to serve, uplift, and walk alongside others. Counseling and community outreach became not just a career path, but a calling.

This pivotal shift led him to explore other paths, eventually earning a B.S. in Business Administration (Computer Science) in 2005.  I went on to earn my M.S.E. in Counselor Education in 2008, where I also completed specialized training in group counseling, career counseling, family/multicultural counseling, psychopathology, and counseling in elementary and middle school.  While pursuing my degrees, I spent three years working in the university’s Web Development Office, where I helped maintain and update the university’s websites—an experience that strengthened his skills in communication, design, and information organization.

My graduate program included impactful internships at Washington Middle School and JFK Elementary School, where I facilitated anger management groups and led protective behavior training for K-5 students.

2009–2013: BHIS / Remedial Counselor

I began my formal counseling career as a BHIS/Remedial Counselor, offering in-home life skills services for children and families. I worked closely with community organizations and provided tutoring, attendance support, and behavior interventions, helping families develop harmony through practical counseling methods.

2013: Urban League Site Manager

I briefly served as Site Manager for the Urban League’s extended-day program, working directly with at-risk youth and coordinating closely with parents and school faculty.

2015–2016: Adjunct Professor

I taught undergraduate courses in World View I & II, Intro to Psychology, and Intro to Research. My teaching style is rooted in sparking critical thinking and helping students connect personal, community, and global themes in practical ways.

2015–2017: Community Outreach Coordination and Counseling

I officially launched J4BG Family Services—a community outreach initiative and clinical practice offering individual, couple, and family counseling services. My clinical approach blends Adlerian therapy with Cognitive Behavioral and Client-Centered techniques. I specialize in helping children and families address issues such as trauma, grief, anxiety, attention challenges, and adjustment disorders.

As Founder and Community Organizer, I spearheaded initiatives such as:

  • Fatherhood Training using the national 24:7 Dads curriculum

  • The Beautification Project, which offered self-care events and inspiration for struggling mothers

  • Family Night events, which brought together families for support, encouragement, and community-building

I also served as a group facilitator at the Carnegie Stout Library’s “Changing Lives Through Literature” program, a national initiative blending literary education and personal growth.

Over time, J4BG expanded to offer deeply discounted or free counseling to community members in need, and I’ve contracted with other organizations like ABCD Therapy & Consulting to extend my services across Iowa.

2016 – 2018: Substance Abuse Counselor

In this role, I provided evaluations, treatment planning, and therapy for individuals navigating substance abuse. I worked closely with the judicial system as a Drug Court Case Manager, coordinating care between the courts, law enforcement, and service providers. I also taught Prime for Life, a drunk driving prevention course.

I also worked part-time, under SASC, as a dual diagnosis counselor at Crescent Community Health Clinic, serving patients with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.

2016 – 2022: Property Manager

Alongside my counseling and outreach work, I managed, and provided general upgrades and maintence to residential and commercial properties. This experience sharpened my leadership, conflict resolution, and project management skills.

2018 – May 2025: Mental Health Counselor

Since 2018 I've continued to provide Insured and private pay mental health and coaching services through the business name "J4BG Family Counseling".

May 2025 – Present: Mental Health Counselor

In May 2025, I will be employed as a Mental Health Counselor under 444 Therapy, continuing my commitment to providing holistic, faith-informed, and client-centered mental health support.  www.444therapy.com

My Philosophy

Whether I’m counseling a young person struggling with identity, teaching a college student about psychology, or speaking to a congregation about faith and restoration—my mission remains the same: “To provide information, create experiences, facilitate atmospheres, and initiate dialogue that sparks curiosity and promotes growth.”

I believe every person has light within them—what I call hope, or the presence of God. My role, in any setting, is to help people see that light for themselves. I hold close the words of Romans 12:3, reminding me that we all have a measure of faith and grace.

My Services, Approaches, and Techniques

I offer counseling support for children, adults, and families who are navigating emotional, behavioral, or adjustment challenges. I specialize in issues like marital conflict, anxiety, depression, grief, and family dynamics.

My core therapeutic approach is grounded in Adlerian therapy, while also drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Client-Centered therapy.  What I love most about counseling is the journey I get to take with each person. I have the opportunity to explore their story and help them recognize the light that already exists inside them.

I often tell people—whether I’m speaking as a counselor, a minister, or a community member—my job is to point out the hope, or the God, that already lives in every human being. Each of us has been given a measure of faith and grace.

Romans 12:3 – “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”

I believe God is a God of restoration. Whatever has been lost—joy, self-worth, relationships, even material things—can be restored. I also believe we, as people made in God's image, are called to help restore others. That’s why I work to bring healing and hope to the people and communities God has placed in my path.

As a Teacher and a Minister...

My life mission—no matter what hat I’m wearing—is simple: to provide information, create experiences, facilitate atmospheres, and start conversations that spark curiosity and help people grow.

In today’s information-driven world, it’s important to use media, technology, and global issues to spark engagement and meaningful dialogue—especially when it comes to cross-cultural and cross-generational connections.

One of my goals is to help people rediscover their excitement for life. I like to approach topics from multiple angles to challenge people to think critically—personally, communally, and globally. I aim to keep my teaching and counseling practical, relevant, and applicable to everyday life. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone take what I’ve shared and apply it in a way that brings real transformation.
