LARRAPY Convos – Blog 25 - “What Is ADHD—and How Do You Resolve It?”

“Why can’t I focus like everyone else?”

“I start things strong, but I never finish.”

“My brain is always loud—and I feel constantly behind.”

If that sounds familiar, you might be living with ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. It’s not just a “kid’s issue,” nor is it simply about being hyper or forgetful. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, regulation, organization, and motivation.

The good news? ADHD can be managed—and even leveraged—as a strength when properly understood and supported.

🧠 What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurological condition that affects the brain’s executive functioning—which is responsible for planning, organizing, focusing, managing time, and controlling impulses.

There are 3 major types of ADHD:

  1. Inattentive type

    • Easily distracted, forgetful, disorganized

    • Trouble following instructions

    • Often daydreaming or zoning out

  2. Hyperactive-Impulsive type

    • Fidgety, restless, talks excessively

    • Impulsive decisions or blurting out

    • Difficulty sitting still or waiting

  3. Combined type

    • Features of both inattentiveness and hyperactivity

👶🏽 Who Can Have ADHD?

  • ADHD affects children, teens, and adults—but it often looks different across age groups.

  • Many adults go undiagnosed, struggling with symptoms like:

    • Missed deadlines

    • Emotional overwhelm

    • Job-hopping or relationship instability

    • Low self-esteem from years of “not measuring up”

🔍 What Causes ADHD?

  • Genetics – ADHD often runs in families

  • Brain structure & chemistry – Imbalances in dopamine/norepinephrine

  • Environmental factors – Premature birth, lead exposure, or trauma

  • Not caused by: bad parenting, too much sugar, or laziness

ADHD is not a character flaw—it’s a brain-based condition that requires support, not shame.

📉 The Struggles of ADHD (When Untreated)

  • Chronic procrastination

  • Poor time and money management

  • Difficulty sustaining relationships

  • Feeling overwhelmed, underperforming, or misunderstood

  • Co-occurring disorders like anxiety, depression, or substance misuse

🌱 Strengths Often Found in People with ADHD

  • Creative thinking

  • High energy and passion

  • Spontaneity and humor

  • Resilience and empathy

  • Deep focus in areas of interest (hyperfocus)

When supported well, people with ADHD can thrive in entrepreneurship, ministry, art, counseling, teaching, and leadership.

🛠 How to Manage and Resolve ADHD

Step 1: Diagnosis & Awareness

  • See a licensed therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist

  • Ask for a full clinical assessment—especially if you’ve struggled since childhood

  • Understanding your brain is the beginning of empowering it

Step 2: Medical Support (If Needed)

  • Stimulants (e.g., Adderall, Vyvanse) increase dopamine for better focus

  • Non-stimulants (e.g., Strattera) can also help with fewer side effects

  • Medication isn’t for everyone—but for many, it’s a game-changer

Step 3: Behavioral & Lifestyle Strategies

  • Use tools: calendars, timers, visual reminders, checklists

  • Break tasks down: one step at a time

  • Create structure: consistent routines, sleep schedule, designated workspaces

  • Exercise regularly: helps release built-up energy and improves focus

  • Accountability: work with a coach, therapist, or mentor

🙏 Step 4: Spiritual Support for ADHD

ADHD can create internal battles with guilt, frustration, and identity. But God’s grace covers your pace.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9“For God is not a God of disorder, but of peace.” – 1 Corinthians 14:33

Spiritual Tools:

  • Meditate on short Scriptures when attention feels scattered

  • Worship to help regulate emotion

  • Ask God for wisdom in managing your time and energy

  • Declare truth over your life: “I am not broken. I am becoming.”

🧭 Parenting or Partnering Someone with ADHD?

  • Be patient, not passive

  • Don’t shame—redirect gently

  • Celebrate effort, not just outcome

  • Use routines and clear expectations

  • Understand that emotional dysregulation is not manipulation—it’s overload

🕊 Final Thought: ADHD Doesn’t Define You

Your brain is different, not defective. You are creative, not chaotic. You are loved, not lazy. And God can use your wiring for His glory.

Your healing isn’t about becoming “normal”—it’s about becoming your best self, with structure, support, and spiritual strength.

“You are fearfully and wonderfully made…” – Psalm 139:14

🙏 A Prayer for ADHD Clarity and Strength

“Lord, thank You for creating my mind with purpose. Help me manage my energy, focus my thoughts, and build routines that honor You. Teach me to embrace my wiring without shame and empower me to walk with wisdom, joy, and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
